Chief Executive Officer
Gary founded the firm in 1992 and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. Gary is responsible for setting the strategic vision of the firm and overseeing the investment process. Over 25 years, Gary has invested with third-party funds spanning multiple strategies and operating companies across many industries.
Prior to founding Palomino, Gary was an associate at Schulte Roth & Zabel in New York City. Gary served on the Board of Directors of Seventh Generation Inc. up until its sale to Unilever PLC and serves on the board of trustees of World ORT.
Gary holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University and a J.D. cum laude from the University of Miami, where he served as managing editor of the University of Miami Law Review. He is currently a member of the bar of the State of New York.
Avi Hasen, CFA
Avi is a Vice President at Palomino Capital. Avi leads the investment team across Palomino's asset classes and is responsible for sourcing, evaluating and monitoring investments. Avi is also involved in setting and implementing the firm’s asset allocation mix and strategic priorities.
Prior to joining Palomino in 2010, Avi spent several years working in business development and operations in two early-stage ventures following his time as an equity research associate at Desjardins Securities, actively monitoring and evaluating companies in the aerospace, industrial and technology sectors.
Avi currently sits on the Executive of the Montreal Jewish Chamber of Commerce and is involved with several charitable initiatives. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance and Accounting at McGill University, where he graduated with Great Distinction on the Dean’s Honour List with a McConnell Scholarship. Avi is also a CFA charterholder.
Thierry joined Palomino Capital in 2019 and is involved in the sourcing, due diligence and analysis process of investment opportunities across all asset classes as well as monitoring the firm’s portfolio companies.
Prior to joining Palomino, Thierry was part of the International Direct Private Equity team at CDPQ, one of the largest Canadian pension funds with more than $300B of assets under management. Thierry previously worked in London for Yorkville Advisors, a hedge fund specialized in innovative structured debt and equity investments for publicly listed issuers.
Thierry completed his Masters in Management degree at the London Business School and also holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Finance from McGill University.
Ashil joined Palomino Capital in 2016 as a Summer Analyst and later as a full-time Investment Analyst involved in comprehensive evaluation of opportunities in the alternative investment space.
Ashil completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance and Economics at McGill University, where he graduated on the Dean’s Honour List. He holds the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) certificate and has passed all 3 levels of the CFA program.
Alexander Matthews, CFA, CAIA
Alexander is involved in deep fundamental research of investment opportunities across Palomino's main areas of focus, as well as monitoring the firm's portfolio.
Prior to joining Palomino in 2013, Alexander was on the research team at BCA, a leading independent provider of macroeconomic investment research.
Alexander is a Chapter Executive of the CAIA Canada Chapter and heads various community service projects with an affiliate of Rotary International. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Joint Honours Economics and Finance at McGill University. Alexander is also a CFA and CAIA charterholder.
Franca Commodari, CPA Auditor, CA, D.E.S.S.
Director of Finance
Franca joined Palomino Capital in 2017. She is responsible for leading the company’s financial and accounting functions, while partnering with its team members to help drive the strategic vision of the company.
Prior to joining Palomino, Franca worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP within both its audit and consulting divisions. She then went on to become Director of Finance and later VP Operations of Aliston Capital Corporation, a private investment company. Franca then joined The National Bank of Canada as a Director of Financing Solutions and was instrumental in developing key financing solutions for corporations involved in mergers and acquisitions.
Franca also lectures at the university level for a multitude of courses at John Molson’s School of Business, including Taxation, Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Reporting, Analysis of Markets and Contemporary Business Thinking. She graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications with Great Distinction and was awarded membership into both the Garnett Key and Golden Key societies. She also holds a Graduate Degree in Accountancy, as well as her Chartered Accountancy (CPA Auditor, CA) title.
Clara joined Palomino Capital Corp as Senior Accountant in July of 2018. Her role requires her to be actively involved in all corporate accounting for the firm.
Prior to joining Palomino, Clara worked in the manufacturing industry for TRU Simulation + Training Inc. (formerly known as Mechtronix Systems Inc.), a company producing flight simulators, for 11 years in accounts payable and later as a Financial Analyst. Clara also worked at Schlesinger Newman Goldman (currently Collins Barrow) as a Junior Auditor for 1 year as part of her internship program at Concordia University’s Institute for Cooperative Education.
Clara holds a degree in Bachelor of Commerce, Major Accounting from Concordia University.
